My Story

Lemons have always been a theme in my life.  My earliest memories of lemon flavors were at my dear neighbor’s house. At Aunt Mary and Uncle Holliday's house I learned how to play backgammon, needlepoint, and all about classical music. I even learned the enjoyment of Mountain Dew in a glass bottle from their son Jim. The visit to the candy jar on the kitchen counter with stainless steel rims for a lemon drop sugar coated candy was always a treat! And when my entrepreneurial brain went in to overdrive at age 8, Aunt Mary stepped in for a life lesson.

It was a hot summer day in the panhandle of Florida in the late 70's, and the utility workers arrived on our street corner.  I leapt into action and moved the kid sized melamine white table top with yellow legs (screaming 1978 design) outside with one small yellow chair – perfect for my sales pitch.  I stacked small paper Dixie cups on the table with the fresh pitcher of lemonade I made and sold each cup for 10 cents.  The workers were grateful for the refreshing break and asked for refills.  My stash of dimes was filling up!

Aunt Mary saw my business operations from her kitchen window and made a quick phone call to my mom.  As I entered my house to make another pitcher, my sweet mom asked exactly what was I doing.  I was so excited to tell her about my venture!  She was quick to praise my creativity, but also taught me that sharing was most important.  So, the second pitcher was “no charge” for the utility workers, and I somewhat reluctantly gave them their dimes back from the first round.

Fast forward to my adult life, and I know that these life lessons of generosity and flexibility are the key to my success and happiness.  When I lost everything to Hurricane Ivan in 2004, the theme of my life was make lemonade.  When my small business felt the severe effects of the recession in 2008 and again with the BP Oil Spill in 2010, I made lemonade.  Turning life lessons into business acumen that help others succeed is my passion.  And thus, Lemonade Consultants was born.
